Faithfulness

With Beth’s birthday and Thanksgiving I haven’t had much time to do much of anything at all, much less write, but there is something on my heart that I wanted to write about.
It all started on Day 4 of the Purpose Driven Life (PDL) when Rick Warren talked about living life in view of eternity and I started wondering “how does living for eternity affect my homemaking?” If anything doesn’t it seem more meaningless to do these routine, mundane tasks in view of the transient nature of existence? I mean in light of all of eternity, does washing dishes today make any difference at all? I think it does. Let me share why.
In Matthew 25 there is a parable called the parable of the talents (which was brought up in Day 5 of PDL) and in it I see that Jesus is teaching about the reward in eternity for faithfulness. In verses 21 & 23 the master in the parable says Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” In this parable it didn’t matter how big or how small the trust was, what mattered was the faithfulness with which it was kept and cared for. That got me to thinking – I will be rewarded for my faithfulness even in these dishes & laundry & sweeping etc. etc. that really makes me want to be sure to be faithful!
Because although I might think for a second that I don’t really aim for being “great” in the Kingdom of Heaven, I know that what I want most is to be closest to my Father, so if washing dishes and changing diapers is going to get me closer to Him, my Heart’s Desire, then let me at them!! I want to be the best homemaker He’s ever seen and I want to get the biggest reward, if that reward means more of Him. He is what I long for, in Him my life finds completion.
I don’t have to be given a lot to be faithful with it, but I do desperately want to be faithful with what I have been given. “And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

Dear Faith, I did not notice the link to your blog the first time I read your e-mail but this morning I did. When I read this entry I cried, all the dishes and diapers that I did etc were not in vain. You grew up, wanted to be a mom, and are seeking to glorify God in your daily round of chores! (Makes me want to go wash something!)What I really want is to see you in Heaven praising the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together with all the saints!
Love, Mom
